Scene One: me, on the Citibank website, September 20th, going to pay my credit card.
*sees five transactions that posted on the 18th that I didn’t make*
*sees that two of them have been refunded*
*tries to dispute the other three online*
*am told I have to call*
*****
Scene Two: me, on the phone with Citibank on the 21st (don’t judge me, I had to work up to the phone call) (I almost didn’t even make it until the 23rd because I thought well, what if they’re closed over the weekend?) (but I did it)
*explains to the human I finally get after five minutes with the automated system, what is happening
Them: did you try going to the website?
Me: The Citi website? Yes. I was told to call.
Them: No, I mean the website of the charge you want to dispute.
Me: Excuse me? What?
Them: Did you attempt to contact the website to dispute the charge?
Me: …. what I’m hearing you tell me is that instead of calling you, the company with whom I have a relationship, you would like me to instead call a website wherein something was charged to my card in order to get it cancelled, when I’ve never heard of the website, don’t trust that it’s a legit company, and even if they are a legit company, I won’t have any of the password or login info they would need to cancel whatever this is? Is that what you’re telling me? Because no. You’re the credit card company, I’m disputing a charge on my card that was not made by me. In fact, more than one charge.
Them: No, no, I’m sorry, that’s just a question I need a yes or a no answer for, for my checklist.
Me *gives an eyeroll I’m sure they could hear in the foreign country where the call center is*
Eventually she does her job, disputes the charges, cancels the current card and issues me a new one that will be there in 4-7 business days.
I think the card came to me on the 27th or 28th; it was during the hurricane and I really didn’t want to deal with it so I left the envelope unopened.
*****
Scene Three: *me, on the website last night, checking to make sure all of the disputed charges were closed. Sees that there’s a new one.* SON OF A — *immediately calls to dispute charges* *tries really hard not to chew the poor kid on the phone a new one, it’s not his fault*
Them: what is the full number on the card?
Me: That’s a good question, I HAVEN’T EVEN OPENED THE ENVELOPE YET.
*he has to transfer me*
I eventually get it through the thick skull of the person he transferred me to that I didn’t make that purchase, I don’t care that it’s a recurring subscription thing, I didn’t make it any more than I made the one dollar charge to the same company on the 18th and y’all disputed that just fine, so I don’t know why this one was approved BEFORE I EVEN GOT MY NEW CARD IN THE MAIL and so no, I don’t care that you’re telling me the subscription (THAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND DIDN’T SIGN UP FOR) will be cancelled.
They cancelled that card last night and will be sending me a new one in 4-7 business days.
This is my irritated face.

I’m irritated for you ; that one dollar charge we all know , is to see if they could get in . Are you thinking of changing banks or would that cause a cascade of problems ? When i need to cancel my debit card which i don’t use for much ; i can go to the bank and have a new one with in an hour of getting there. I don’t know anything about having a real bank account or finances . I hope to hecks you have another source for cash or purchases.
This happened to a friend last year – before the card even arrived in the mail!
((Hugs))
Citibank right up there with BofA. Credit unions are generally easier to deal with.
Capital One, baby. We used to get a Citibank card every four to six months because they found fraudulent charges and would cancel it randomly. My favorite was when we were on vacation. Grrrrrr.
Is this a debit card? How did someone get the new number? Could be a Citi employee. You might want to make a complaint to Citi.
People really suck.
