Wildlife Wednesday (03/06/24)

I did a massive check of the game cams last week, saved the good ones and reformatted the cards, and so this is just from when I replaced everything. One of the cams, the oldest one from my original buying spree years ago, has bit the dust and no longer accepts that batteries can in fact power it, so I’m down to two cams and the new live birdcam (I’ll try to post a video here but I’m not sure if WP and/or my host supports that). Meanwhile, there’s a lot of action at my OTHER birdfeeders… just not BIRD action. Sigh.

Oh, hey! It will let me post the video, just not in with the gallery of pictures I uploaded at the same time.

I really do love living out here. The birds, the deer, the turkeys, the gopher tortoises, the coyotes, the foxes, even the feral cats and my neighbor’s dog that he refuses to keep on his property. I’m really out here living my best Snow White life (without the useful dwarves and the useless Prince). I’ve seen the occasional horse and goat, although those were both escapees from down the road. Those were pretty funny, though. I’d love to be able to get larger birds on the cam – the hawks, the owls, the shrikes, the woodpeckers (downy, red-bellied, and pileated). The birdfeeders over by my pergola get tons of warblers, mostly pine warblers, but alas, there’s no live cam over there so I try to make due with my camera. Mostly what I get is the empty birdfeeder after they’ve JUST flown off, haha.

This time two years ago everything was so up in the air. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to stay out here. I wasn’t sure if it was even realistic, emotionally, let alone financially. Today I’m really kind of OK. I’m making this place mine, and inviting as much wildlife around as I can. Most of the property is pretty untouched, both my 15 acres and the land around me. I hope it stays that way. There’s so much wildlife around.

My life is an open book; but somebody has torn out a few of the pages.
