Oh April, I miss you already

03 May

With your cooler temps, your beautiful weather, your blooming flowers… and now you’ve shriveled up and turned into a brutally hot May. I’m glad I enjoyed you while you were here.

I had real plans to finish a ton of things in April, and while those didn’t pan out I still had a great month (in spite of Buddha’s health scare and subsequent death). I think I had such a great month because we closed the shop for Easter – bonus day off FOR THE WIN! – and I took some mental health days off – FIVE DAY WEEKEND FOR THE TRIPLE FUCKING AWESOME WIN – and I felt like that really gave me some time to step back and get my head together. I spent a lot of time being social, too; more than in a “normal” month. I met friends for ice cream. I had family and friends over, twice in the same week. I went out and did things. I need to remember to do things like that more often; I know I complain about being tired all the time, but being social and doing things is really very good for me. There’s a balance in there between “me time” and “fun times” and I really hit it in April.

One of the things I thought a lot about this month was Buddha’s death; while I worried about her (worried that she was uncomfortable, worried that she was in pain) I never really flipped out about her death. I asked my friend Jenn (always honest, luvyew cuteshews!) if because I didn’t feel that broken up about it, was I in denial since we’d lost three cats in the last year? Was I just not letting myself feel the grief because my lawd, isn’t three in one year enough? Was I sublimating? … and Jenn kind of half-smiled and allowed as how if there’s one thing I am not good at, it’s sublimating. Har! So I think it comes down to this: I’ve had Buddha her whole life. She was born behind the couch in my living room when I lived out at the farm the last time – she had a good early life as a farm cat, spent her teen years learning how to be cool and relaxed from my then-oldest-cat Selkie, spent her whole adult life here in this house as an indoor/outdoor cat chasing lizards, sleeping in the sun, watching birds, making friends in the house and in the neighborhood. She had a most excellent kitty life. And in the end, it wasn’t a quick tragic death and it wasn’t a slow painful death. She just sort of… wound down. She was even purring a little that morning, and never seemed to be hurting. We can all only hope for a life like that. I don’t feel that there was anything I failed to give her, any way that she was lacking. I feel like celebrating her life rather than mourning her passing. And obviously I feel like going through the whole thing again, because in about four or five more weeks we will be bringing these little bundles of joy into our home. Yay, kittens!

Most of my photos of the day were either of beautiful blooming flowers or shots while dogwalking. April is one of my favorite months in Gainesville. The temperature isn’t cold, isn’t hot; the flowers are blooming everywhere; mornings are just cool enough to make you believe summer won’t be so excruciating (HAHAHAHA) and even though pollen is killing all of us, I love being outdoors in April.

Oh! I did take a bonus photo to finish off March – Tim had finished wrangling the yarn last month and I finally got it out of my car and back into the shop where it could be donated (it was, and it was very appreciated – thanks, mom!).

The big news in Gainesville – besides the never-ending fuckery of the Publix construction in our parking lot (whoa, how did I not take a photo of that this month?) and the 16th Ave confunction, is that an awesome cupcake shop opened. We feel like a big city now – we have a cupcake store! Or maybe it’s just that our THIGHS feel bigger… because we have easier access to cupcakes. Either way, who cares?! CUPCAKES!

While just about a week ago I feel like I wrangled my shop knitting under control, overall I didn’t finish nearly as much as I thought I would this month (one, two, three, four things) (it would have been five but I still have yet to cut out and glue on the mouth). But my shop knitting is a little more manageable now than it was even ten days ago, and I’m feeling less panicked about deadlines and more able to take a day or two and work on non-deadline fun things for me.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand… that’s about it! How was your April? What are your plans for May?

Not the day I expected, but the day I needed.

20 Apr

So, a few days ago Jenn and I were talking about Tuesday – typically my day off and recently a day of somewhat leisure for her as well, so we’ve been spending them together boozing it up hanging out. I happen to be taking a few mental health days off (not because the cat died, although the boon of having some time away from work is giving me time to process my feelings) and wanted to do a few things that I’ve been wanting to do for some time but never seem to have the time to do. One of those things is to go to Devil’s Millhopper, which for some reason even though I have lived here since 1979 I have never been to. Errr? So lets go! HAHAHAHA, joke’s on me, they’re closed on Tuesday! What the fuck kind of place is closed on Tuesdays?! So we went to the San Felasco hiking trailhead instead and hiked the Moonshine Creek and Creek Sink trails. After which there were adult beverages and Italian food (not at the park) followed by cupcakes at this freaking faaaabulous cupcake shop that just opened. Ooops, looks like their bandwidth is exceeded. If you’re on Facebook, try here. ANYHOO… did a lot of thinking, a lot of hanging with Jenn, a lot of laughing, a lot of contemplating. Here are some pretty pictures.

Proposed median changes: a letter to whom it may concern

16 Apr

I’ve been struggling mentally with this for weeks, even more so in the last 24 hours since I finally got a contact name for someone who might actually listen to my concerns. Below is a letter that I just wrote, where I really hope I came out sounding like a rational adult and less like the Crazy Yarn Store Lady OMGPONIESa;slfja;dsfja;ldfskj.

To whom it may concern;

I am writing in regards to the proposed median modifications between NW 43rd Street and NW 41st Street on NW 16th Ave/Blvd. Not only do I live off of 16th Avenue, but I own a business off of 16th Blvd, right in front of two of the proposed median closings; as such, I feel highly invested in this project.

In spite of the fact that “notification of these activities will be given to the public through signs placed on site, press releases, fliers, emails, etc.” I have found it difficult to find information (other people I know who have been given names and phone numbers have found their calls to never be returned, and that the contact person they were given is no longer the contact person); but was recently pointed towards a few pages and PDFs on the Alachua County website. I now feel that I am more familiar with the plan of the project. Many of the points I wholeheartedly agree with; most especially with making the entire corridor more bicycle-friendly and the additions of sidewalks in some locations.

However, I am extremely concerned with the closing of two out of the three left-hand turns into Millhopper Square when heading west on 16th. One of the closings I could support, the closing of the median close to the Kangaroo station. Between the median opening being so close to the light, where people wait to get into the Kangaroo thereby blocking traffic trying to turn South onto 43rd, and the dangerously fast and blind right onto 16th when heading north on 43rd, that is an intersection that does need to be reviewed for safety concerns. But I am extremely concerned that the inability to make a left into Millhopper Square at the median between Fresh Market and Publix is going to put an incredible amount of stress on the very small intersection/light at the corner at the Gainesville Community Playhouse.  Being that I now have to take that light in order to get to work, I can tell you that the length of the turn lane is barely over two car lengths. I have read in your paperwork that traffic studies are being conducted, but many of the business owners in our plaza are wondering if those studies that are being conducted now are taking into account the reduced flow of traffic that we’re seeing due to the Jo-Anne’s closing and the demolition/reconstruction of Publix. Once the new 51,000 square foot Publix reopens in the fall, after the decision has been made to close the medians, the sheer volume of traffic turning at the light – with a turn lane not quite the length of three cars – is going to cause many people trying to continue straight west on 16th to sit through many a light change while cars slowly filter through to the left.

For about a week or so, the big median between Publix and Fresh Market was coned to indicate a “left in/right out” turn; this was fabulous. It negated the dangerous activity of people speeding recklessly across four lanes of traffic to get into the other plaza, but it still left the median open for the flow of east/west traffic to be able to turn into the plaza on the opposite side of the road. Now, from what I understand from reading the documents I found online, the left into the Fresh Market plaza will be allowed, but the left into Publix/Millhopper will be closed. I find this frustrating both as a person who drives into the plaza and as a business owner in the plaza. In order to get into our plaza when coming from the east, customers to the locally owned businesses in our center now have to turn in at Gainesville Community Playhouse, drive down to the Post office, up around the gated Publix construction, and through an almost blind entrance in order to get to our parking lot. Not that a lot of people are using that entrance now that the turn has been closed at the median strip, so I guess that’s one thing to be thankful for.

It would make many of us in Millhopper Square relieved to hear that the plan might be changed to reconsider the closing of the larger of the two medians. The way it was just last week, “left in, right out”, is a permanent solution that we could get behind. We would love to hear about any changes, or updates, or to know if you are interested in feedback at all. I see in your documents that “notification of these activities will be given to the public through signs placed on site, press releases, fliers, emails, etc.” but we in Millhopper Square don’t feel that this is necessarily true. We find things out not through fliers or press releases, but through gossip of our customers; this makes us feel that our ideas, our input, our feedback, and our worries about the future of our businesses aren’t important in the grand scheme of these traffic changes – but we would also love to be proven wrong about that, and hope that letters like mine can help to open up discussion.

Thank you for your time,

Beauty surrounds me

10 Mar

Today looked like such a beautiful day that I brought my camera with me while walking Backup Dog. One of these will eventually be the photo of the day, I’m just not sure which one yet – I can’t choose! Votes welcome.
