If you stand for nothing, Burr, what will you fall for?

If you stand for nothing, Burr, what will you fall for?

I’ve pretty much exhausted all the letters on Resistbot (you do know Resistbot, right?) so I wrote one. It’s here on the Resistbot website, but I’m also going to put it below in case anyone wants to copy it. Send it as-is, adjust it to make it more personal, whatever. Speak your truth, even if your voice is shaking.

***

My question for you today is… why did you get into politics? No, really, I honestly want to know. Was it for clout? Fame? Money? Power? Or did you start out genuinely wanting to represent people, to make a difference, to speak for the people?

Do you? Do you speak for the people? Do you speak for all the people you represent, whether or not their personal beliefs are your beliefs? Do you try to find a middle ground for representation between your political party and the other party, knowing that the people you were elected to represent might be from either side of this currently fraught coin?

I’m asking because the majority of the United States support progressive agendas. Agendas that are being ripped away from us almost hourly.

In recent polls:

90% of Americans want more gun control laws
89% oppose gerrymandering
79% want the rich to pay their fair share of taxes
76% want a higher minimum wage
73% want student loan debt relief
72% believe in the scientifically proven climate crisis
71% support labor unions
70% want a ceasefire in Gaza
69% support Medicare for All
69% support legal abortion
69% support same sex marriage
65% support SCOTUS term limits
65% want to end the electoral collage and move to a more representative system
56% support cutting Pentagon spending

Sources: NPR, CNN, Gallop, Pew, YouGov, Quinnipiac, FOX News, Yale, AFL-CIO, NIH, The Guardian, US Census Bureau, Data for Progress

Those numbers? Every one of them is above 50%. Even if the area you represent was evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, statistically more than 50% of them want these things. Regardless of their political affiliation.

So… who are you representing? Why are you representing them? What do you stand for? Do you stand for the protection of the people? Because right now, there are not a lot of people who feel protected by their chosen politicians.

Are you taking a stand against the horrifying coup that is shredding our Constitution right now? Yes; Government has it’s problems. Yes, there are changes that need to be made. But not like this. Will you stand against the tide that the people you represent see coming to drown them? Will you stand against the lies? Will you stand and demand to see the truth behind what Elon Musk is saying he’s finding? Will you stand up to Donald Trump and his obvious lies?

Because if you don’t take a stand, we’re all going to fall.
