The dichotomy of me

Dichotomy:
1. Split or division into two, eg mind and body; fact and value; sacred and secular.
2. A dichotomy is a division into two non-overlapping or mutually exclusive and jointly exhaustive parts. They are often contrasting and spoken of as “opposites”. The term comes from dichotomos (divided): dich- ([in] two) temnein (to cut).

For example: my desk at home (not for the faint of heart!) compared to my desk at work.

My desk at home makes me wonder how I ever frelling find anything. My desk at work makes me wonder if other people who glance in think that I have no personality whatsoever.

Are any of the rest of you that different in work vs. home?

Questions

From Skip--

1) Outside of me & Tim, who is the sexiest man you’ve ever met?

Grinner.

2) If you could change one thing about yourself… Without telling what that thing is, describe how it would change things.

I would have less people who “used to be friends”.

3) Everyone has a best day - what was your best two days in a row?

Probably two days that I didn’t appreciate at the time, and were so easy and relaxed that I’ve forgotten them.

4) No restrictions - where are we all going to dinner?

Chopstix.

5) Whats the most exotic locale you’ve found yourself in?

Iceland.

Eight (more) random things

DadaMama tagged me, and I keep forgetting to do this… I think because I’ve done it before and worry that I am running low on random things. Thus, I am changing the rules just a little. Those of you who know me well… can you tell how I changed the rules before you get to the end?

RULES: We have to post these rules before we give you the facts. Players start with 8 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write their own blog post about their eight things and post these rules. At the end of your post, you need to choose eight people who get tagged and list their names.  Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they are tagged.

My 8 Things ...

1. When I was about eleven, I stepped on a piece of driftwood that went about half an inch into my foot. Since I never got any sort of medical help for it, not only do I still have a scar on the bottom of my foot that is almost an inch long, but when I have been walking all day I get a limp because the muscle never healed correctly.

2. When I was about seven, I climbed to the top of a large oak tree in our front yard. I got stuck, and my dad had to come up and get me. As he was starting to go back down with me, I slipped out of his grasp and fell to the ground, breaking my arm in three places. That one, I got medical treatment for.

3. When I was about nineteen, I was in an elevator at a science fiction convention that got stuck between floors when one of the two extremely drunk guys thought it would be fun to open the doors while the elevator was moving to see the walls go by.

4. When I was about twenty, a tree fell on my new car and crushed it. Oddly, it started right up and my dad was able to drive it from the farm 45 minutes into town.

5. When I was about twenty-seven, I developed a sudden (guess it had been latent) seafood allergy. I can no longer eat shellfish, to my deep despair (but to the joy of lobsters and shrimp everywhere).

6. When I was about thirty-five, I ate something else that I was allergic to and broke out into horrible hives all over my body. I never did figure out what it was, but am guessing that it was something in the bamboo dish that I ordered from Bahn Thai. I’ve never ordered that again, but have broken out in hives once more since then-- with no idea whatsoever of what I might have ingested to cause it.

7. When I was about nine, I swallowed a quarter while trying to keep it away from my Stepmonster’s daughter from her previous marriage. It turned sideways and got stuck, so I couldn’t eat or drink anything. I wound up having to get it surgically removed.

8. Of the above seven things, only five of them are true.  One of them is partially true. One of them is an outright lie. Instead of tagging eight people, I’m going to ask you to guess in the comments about which ones are true, which one is partially true, and which one is completely false. After eight people have guessed, I’ll tell you which ones are which.

On vegetarianism

Two things got me thinking about this post; my Secret Pal said something about wondering what kind of vegetarian I am, and also, while I did think about this at the time I didn’t post about it because, well, time blurs. But this last May 1st (Beltane, for all you Pagans playing along with the Chez Snark home game) was my 16th anniversary of becoming a vegetarian. Although, between you and me? I prefer the term “pickytarian”. According to the Font of All Knowledge, Wikipedia, I could best be described as a Pescetarianist.

There are many rationales for maintaining a pescetarian diet. Some pescetarians simply do not enjoy the taste or texture of eating meats from land animals. As with most dietary choices, the rationale behind it can differ greatly from person to person.

Here’s why I eat what I eat, and don’t eat what I don’t eat: I’m a picky eater. I don’t like beef/steak/veal; it makes me gag and I won’t eat it (I did try a small bite of Tim’s bacon a few years ago just to see if my tastes had changed and surprise! It was gross!). I don’t care for chicken, although I will eat it if I go to someone’s house and they have made it for dinner, as I am too polite to say “ick” and would rather just choke it down with copious amounts of wine. Turkey doesn’t really taste like anything to me (it’s like living tofu! Tastes like what it’s cooked with!) and I will eat it (a) at Thanksgiving/Christmas (b) in Unca Joe’s chili and (c) if I go to someone’s house and they have made it for dinner. I will eat my body weight in shrimp or lobster or crab, if I am allowed. And I can’t get enough of cheese. But keep your evil eggs away from me, you heathen! (Egg salad? Get thee behind me, oh side order of Satan!) I will eat things that have eggs in them (cake, cookies) but tend to not like the actual eating of the egg, unless I’m having some major protein deficiency.

So I guess what I’m saying is that it’s not political with me. My ancestors didn’t claw their way to the top of the food chain just so that I could keep eating organically grown asparagus (but damn, is that good, or what?!). I just don’t like the taste and/or texture of certain foods.

I respect the people who have taken a stand about not eating animals because of the way they are treated-- provided those people also don’t wear leather, knit with wool, or use lard-based soap.

And I totally respect (all joking aside here) people who have made the decision for vegetarianism or veganism for health or religiously based reasons. In fact, most of the vegans I know are vegans for health reasons. That, I can get behind. Unfortunately I like cheese waaaaaaaaay too much to be a vegan.

Okay.... have I rambled on enough? Anybody have any questions...? Did I forget to say something vital (I am tired, after all...)...?

PS. Nine out of ten cannibals agree-- vegetarians have better taste!

PPS. I’m not a vegetarian because I love animals. I’m a vegetarian because I hate plants.
(Think about that one. I’ll wait around until you get it.)

My tag is sticking out

I got tagged by Jacquie!

Each person tagged gives 7 random facts about themselves. Those tagged need to write in their blogs 7 facts, as well as the rules of the game. You need to tag seven others and list their names on your blog. You have to leave those you plan on tagging a note in their comments so they know that they have been tagged and need to read your blog. (I think I’ll just tag a few innocents, and hope that they read my blog. YES I AM CHEATING ALREADY. Oh well.) Hey, wait a second…deja vu! I’m sensing a theme here.

But I’m going to —GODDAMN IT THERE WENT MY “N” KEY AGAIN!!!! GRR!!! I’m so close to gluing this motherfucker down. Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn There. Got it back on. Fucker pops off ONE MORE TIME and I’m going postal.

Ever had one of those days where some people don’t understand how lucky they are that you don’t carry a gun?

Anyway. Moving on.

The facts:

1) When I am very, very angry, I will tell you; but then I’m over it. Unless you keep yanking my chain, and in that case I will write you off.
2) I went to art school.
3) I am usually late with everything important: birthday presents, cards, acknowledgments, thank-you cards, Hallmark Holidays… you name it. It’s not that I don’t care. I just have no concept of time.
4) I am an Agent of Chaos, and everything around me turns into random piles of stuff. Flat surfaces are not safe around me. This is not s super-power I would wish on anyone.
5) I am also a pack rat, meaning that occasionally rather than clean up all my random piles of stuff, I will just pack it all up into a box, “to go through later”. And then that box will sit. And sit. And sit.
6) If you give me advice when I’m not asking for it, I will smile and nod and immediately forget what you said as soon as you go away.
7) I can read - and comprehend - more than 200 words/minute.

I tag … uh-oh. See, Jacquie also tagged Beth, so I’d tag her, but then she’d be tagged twice. And what if I pick Sharon, and then Beth is all, “bitch! I wanted to tag Sharon!” and then there’ll be a huge knitta smackdown wrestling match (only instead of creamed corn or mud, we’ll be wading in cashmere). I tell you what. I’ll tag THE FIRST SEVEN PEOPLE WHO READ THIS. Muhuwahahahhahaha. Suckers.

Six weird things about me

Jacquie tagged me-- !

“THE RULES: Each player of this game starts with the ‘6 weird things about you.’ People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says ‘you are tagged’ in their comments and tell them to read your blog.”

Six weird things about me:
1. I sleep with a stuffed animal that I’ve had since I was 16.
2. I grew up at science fiction conventions, being influenced by writers and editors and wildly creative (and probably drunken) people.
3. I can not stand the texture of onions, peppers, or milkshakes; they all make me vomit. So does melted ice cream. Hurk!
4. I have a birthmark under my right breast that turns white when I get wet (like when I’m in the shower, or in a swimming pool).
5. I have a brown birthmark approximately the same size and shape on my right arm, although it has faded significantly the older I get.
6. I’m surrounded by such a huge contingent of weird people that I don’t actually consider myself to be all that weird.

Who am I tagging? Well, normally I don’t tag people, but if Betharoopie, Daisy, Kelly (Kellyoke Kelly), Sharon, Becca, and Knitter Kelly (Kelly2) wanted to do this, that’d be fun! Knitter Kelly doesn’t have a blog, but we love her anyway!

Describe yourself with a random shuffle

Totally ganked from Marie!

So. The meme. It asks questions, you put your media player on “shuffle” and let it answer the questions. No cheating. Sure, a lot of it won’t make sense, but some of them are funny anyway.

How does the world see me?
Please Don’t Bury Me by John Prine. Heh. “Please don’t bury me down in the cold cold ground/no I’d rather have them cut me up and pass me all around.” Great-- the world sees me as cake!

About me… in pictures!

Continuing with the lame posting while working on two other websites, a novel, uploading Disney photos, the day-job, and oh yeah; trying to HAVE A LIFE… here’s the “About me” Image meme, and I’m sorry but I totally forget where I got this.

Go to Google Images, find an image on the first page when you do a key word search for the following, and post it.

Where I was born… Baltimore, Maryland (and this picture really makes me think of the “Eromitlab” episode of Homicide...)
image

Where I live now… Gainesville
image

My name… (I’m going with my last name, since my first name is taken up by the following question) Haldeman (oh, don’t be so freaked out, it’s not like I try to keep my last name a secret… hey, look, a photo of my uncle!)
image

My grandmother’s name… One is named Alice, and the other was named Lorena.
Alice:
image

Lorena (this is so cool I had to not scale it down; click to make bigger):
image

My favorite food… (subject to change at a moments notice) Lobster (this was also pretty cool, and I must now add “seeing the giant lobster” to my list of tacky things to visit… the fisherman is lifesized!)
image

My favorite drink… (subject to change at a moments notice) anything fruity and frozen
image

My favorite song… (subject to change at a moments notice) Fairytale of New York
image

My favorite smell… (subject to change at a moments notice) Sandlewood
image

Okay, this took WAY longer than I thought it would. I could have written a real entry in this time!

Feel free to steal this meme- I did!

Top ten fears

I have at least three of these (acrophobia, aerophobia, and arachnaphobia). Also some slight claustrophobia, but anyone who’s been on an elevator at a science fiction convention can sympathize, I’m sure.

Top Ten Fears

The question email

In which I answer that email that gets passed around all the time; I got tired of answering it every time so now I can just send people here.

Are you single?
Nope.

What Is Your Living Arrangement?
My husband and I own a big house in Gainesville Florida that we share with a lot of animals. Specifically, in case you're interested: a 5 year old black Lab/Newfoundland mix named Bridgett, a 10 year old domestic short hair light tortie (polydactyl) named Rembrandt, an 9 year old dsh somewhat-tabby named Buddha, and two 3 year old long haired cats-- a dark tortie named Tavi and a light tabby named Brindle. As if that's not enough, add to the mix one corn snake. Edited to add that we now have another DSH, an orange male named Chili.

What Do You Think About The Occult?
I think there are many things in the world that are Mysteries, which only a few people can see or understand. Trying to define them takes away the magic.

Favorite Magazines:
My favorite is BUST. Followed closely by National Geographic, Locus, and Martha Stewart Living. Yes, I said Martha Stewart. Shut up.

More about you…

Oh, sure, here’s another one...

Shamelessly stolen from Skip’s site, but he hasn’t given me permission to out his address yet, so I’ll have to leave you guessing.

1) What image is on your desktop?
2) Which websites do you visit most?
3) What are you obsessed by?
4) Name one artist/musician/writer that inspires you (pick one or more)?
5) What are you working on now (outside of your journal)?
6) What do you read in bed?
7) Favorite city? Why?
8) To you, what qualifies as a good celebration?
9) If you only had 3 albums of music to take to a desert island, what would they be and why?
10) If you could do anything else with your life, what would it be?
11) What keeps you awake at night?
12) And finally, any famous last words?

10 things I’ve forgotten

a post about forgetting

I’ve forgotten how much it hurt when I stepped on a piece of driftwood and it went half an inch into my foot.
I’ve forgotten what it felt like to have a quarter stuck in my esophagus.
I’ve forgotten what school lunches taste like, exactly.
I’ve forgotten how disgusting the seaweed at Pine Island feels on your feet.
I’ve forgotten how to cast a reel.
I’ve forgotten how smarmy and what utter bullshit the ‘lets just be friends’ speech is.
I’ve forgotten how desperate I felt when I was married the first time and how miserable and marginalized I was.
I’ve forgotten how I used to kill plants all the time.
I’ve forgotten how whatever I was going to be like and whatever I was going to be doing when I finally grew up and started living was such a far away mystery.
I’ve forgotten what it’s like to be lonely.
