Duel Roles

Duel Roles (Fists of Earth)Duel Roles by William Hatfield

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book picks up pretty much exactly where the first one left off, and carries on at much the same pace. If you liked the first one, you’ll definitely like the second one — but the author does a great job of summarizing, so if you haven’t read the first one you won’t be lost picking this one up.

As with the first book, this is very action-packed and full of eye-rolling puns (which isn’t necessarily bad, mind you!). The characters were a little more fleshed out, new fun characters were introduced, and overall I would call this a fun read.

One thing I like about this author is that he’s not afraid to injure, or kill off, a character people like. I think that’s a brave choice, and tend to like writers who do that. With as lighthearted as most of these characters seem much of the time, they do have moments of genuine pain and sorrow, which I appreciate.
