Cleaning out some saved sites, so I apologize if any of these are ones you’ve seen before!

I love abandoned places. Old falling-down houses, bricked-off subway stations, hotels that were never finished, power plants left to rot, empty hospitals and institutions. There’s just something so lonely, so stark, such a sense of death and decay (and maybe a little horror movie) to most of them. Here are a few that I’ve been saving to share…

I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite photo from the Ruins of Gary, Indiana.

This abandoned theme park in New Orleans makes me think of Something Wicked This Way Comes (yes, even though that was a traveling circus).

An abandoned power station from the 1940s makes me think of all kinds of post-Apocalypse scenarios.

This 50-story building in Bangkok was never finished.

After touring seven abandoned breweries, yes; I would want a beer.

A Japanese pop-singer’s abandoned house and belongings.

More story than photos, but still good – Into the Tunnels of NYC.

Speaking of tunnels, how about the Paris Metro? Or the London Post Office Railway?

My apologies if any of these are repeats — I’m cleaning out my starred items!

Most of you know that I’m fascinated with the website My Parents Were Awesome; sometimes I just like the look of the person, sometimes I love that the photo is so indicative of a time, sometimes I wonder and imagine what that person might have gone on and done with their lives. Here are some of my favorites from the last little while.

—

Dexter and Doris are rocking the swimsuits.

Melanie kicks ass.

Andrei rocks the bad-boy look.

Dan and Francesca look like movie stars.

Heinz and Lola look like they were having a good time.

Patricia looks like a free spirit.

I don’t know whether to hope that Mike and Diane were dressed up for a Halloween party… or hope that they weren’t!

Lisen looks like someone I would have hung out with when I was in Art School. Actually, so does Cate.

—

For the most part I don’t like to recommend videos that are very long – I don’t like to sit and watch long boring shit that someone else has said is the best thing since sliced bread, why should you?! But even at nine minutes long I found this a very easy watch. Partly it was because the man is a hoarder, partly because he’s actually quite interesting and creative.

Apparently Norway gives out an award every year for the best roof incorporating tradition turf – I love these photos!

—

Here’s another one for Sharon – if I’d had $7500, I totally would have bought this for you! Related: Welcome to my Dome-cile.

—

For those who like either found art, typewriters, or cephalopods – an octopus made from typewriter parts.

—

Here’s one for Linda, I bet she knows a child or three who would like the Little Librarian Kit!

—

I am not a fan of eating meatloaf (possibly it falls too close to the “guess what you just ate” game); but I like the look of this Mummy Meatloaf!

—

Ahahahahaha! It’s true. Love will tear us apart.

—

Did you see, a few months ago, the video of the woman in England dumping her neighbors cat into a trash bin? Yeah. Ow, my eyes just rolled so far back into my head they got stuck. Apparently in addition to town-wide ridicule and death threats, she’s been fined. I’m not saying I’ve never done anything supremely stupid on the spur of the moment, but… damn, lady.

—

Too late for Halloween (I didn’t realize I’d been holding out on you guys so long!), but here it is anyway – The Candy Hierarchy.

You may not know, but I have a thing for clocks (one day I will own an elaborate and annoyingly loud cuckoo clock… one day….). So I found this article on Frank and Joseph Bily, clock carvers, absolutely fascinating.

—

I also have a thing for books, but sadly didn’t like this library information desk made out of books as much as you might think I would. I think I didn’t like it because (and this may be the point of the desk) you can’t see what any of the books *are*.

—

Also fascinating? A moonshine maker describes his set-up.
I… I have no words. No; wait. I do. a;ldfkja;dfjla;dfljadslfj!!!11!1!

From the article:

TROPHY CLUB, Texas – Administrators at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club suspended a 16-year-old boy on Tuesday because his eyes were bloodshot and they thought he might have been smoking marijuana.

The teen said he was not high. Instead his eyes were red because he had been grieving the loss of his murdered father.

—

Have I mentioned that my birthday is tomorrow? And this “Traditional Greeting” hoodie is fucking awesome? Just putting that out there.

From the awesome to the awesomely cute – how to make a teensy tiny BBQ grill out of an Altoid Tin. WANT! OMG teh cute!!! And it WORKS!

—

Speaking of food, what the fuck should I have for dinner? Bwah! I keep clicking, just because it’s so funny. Also now I am hungry.

—

Completely changing the subject, here are some absolutely nightmarish photos of fire tornadoes. Yikes.

—

Not being a parent, I am usually wondering why parents worry about the things they do, and quizzing my friends who are parents on their fears and worries. I found the depth of this article on things parents should and shouldn’t worry about a little lacking, but.. then again… I’m not a parent.

—

Here’s one for Sharon, who’s probably already seen this, but check out this cool Star Wars tattoo!
—

This is haunting – Ghosts in the Hollow. Probably only interesting to you if you’re into abandoned buildings, coal mines and miners, traditional music, and Appalachia. Which, you know, I am.

I know so many people who would appreciate these science cookie cutters!

—

I also know a lot of people who would appreciate the many faces of Johnny Depp. Hard to say which one is my favorite!

—

From Regretsy – Beached Fail.
—

I’m kind of intrigued, and yeah, maybe kind of jealous of the most isolated man on the planet.

—

Showing how behind I am in my linkdumps, RIP Jack Horkheimer. Keep looking at the stars!

—

From “My Parents Were Awesome” lately I have liked Barbara (not my stepmother Barbara, a different Barbara), and Maira.

—

—

Long-time readers will be happy to know I’m still keeping abreast of the situation (or should I say aFOOT?): Ninth foot washes up on the beaches of Vancouver.

—

I liked this list of books that people wanting to get to know science fiction should read; I have read a good portion of them (have you?). But there are also a couple I’ve never even heard of, and will now be looking for.

—

I will preface this one by saying that HE WALKED AWAY FROM THE ACCIDENT. Motorcyclist with a camera gets hit head-on by a truck. I say again; he lived.
