Embracing my inner bag lady
I’ve spent lots of time this week thinking about this, and this is what I’ve come up with after hours of introspection, reading Ravelry forums on perfect knitting bags, and talking it over with friends. Here are my conclusions, in no particular order…
- I like big bags and I can not lie! (sorry Shortie, I know you just spit soda all over your screen)
- Just because I like big bags does not mean I should carry a big bag, because what do I do when I have a big bag? Fill that fucker right to the brim, making it hell to carry.
- I want a laptop bag for traveling, that meets these requirements: fits my 17” laptop; still has room for a knitting project; has outside pockets for easy access to wallet/cell phone/boarding pass; will fit under seat in front of me.
- I want a purse that is good for daily use that meets these requirements: has outside pockets for easy access to wallet/cell phone; can hold my day planner; roomy but not so much that I will be able to fit heavy bricks inside; has strap long enough to be slung over shoulder and/or across back; room for a small knitting project is a bonus.
- I want a knitting bag that is big enough to carry the biggest thing I might be working on outside of the home (pullovers nearing completion); is easy to see inside of (IE not a black interior); has easy access pockets; can be slung over shoulder; not so large that I will be able to fit heavy bricks inside.
And the verdict…?
Purse:
The Haiku To-Go bag (it’s driving me nuts trying to snag the photo, so just go look if you want to see it; I’m getting the “bloom” in chocolate).
Knitting Bag:

Laptop Bag:
Sticking with the laptop bag I ganked from Tim a few years ago.
- My laptop does fit in it, though not directly in the padded pouch.
- I’ve been using it for years, it does fit both a laptop and a knitting project (and books).
- It has a holder on the outside for a water bottle, not that they let you have those in airports any more, har har.
- It has two outside pockets (and those also have pockets) that my wallet/cell phone/boarding pass fit in nicely with easy access.
- It has the geeky-ist VSLive! logo on the outside, so when my knitting needles poke out of the top I outgeek pretty much everyone within a three-mile radius.
- I already own it, so I feel less guilty about spending so much money on a purse and a knitting bag.
So. There it is. My justification for baggage. Now if only I could explain the yarn stash so easily! Or the boxes of comic books. Or the shelves and shelves of literature (oh, wait, that one makes obvious sense).
