In which I confuse people by making this look like a scarf I already made last month

May is for Ari

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in “Berry”
Needles: Size 2 straights or circulars
Pattern: May is for Ari
Notes: Continuing with 2008: A Year in Scarves… we have May is for Ari. Ari is the twin sister of my now five-year-old god-daughter (who was the inspiration for last month’s scarf), and of course she is also very into pink! Although the girls are twins, they aren’t identical. So just like Ari being both skinnier and taller than her sister, the May scarf is thinner and longer than April’s scarf. They are both, however, made from the same yarn (the scarves, not the sisters) and have very similar stitch patterns. Similar, but not exactly alike.

January is for Karen, for me

January is for Karen (2)

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted in “Safari”
Needles: Size 8 straights
Pattern: January is for Karen
Notes: This one is for me! Also, I totally screwed up the last rows, in that I knit one row (instead of three) and then bound off. I blame the fact that I’m also working on two other scarves that are “knit one row and bind off”. Clearly I could not brain the day I finished this… and clearly it’s not the end of the world because you will not see me ripping out and reworking!

April is for Lili

All morning long I’ve had this feeling of impending doom… feeling that I’ve forgotten… something. I don’t know what. But something. It turns out I’ve forgotten to bring my pattern notes with me for the April scarf, so I can’t get it written and uploaded. But here’s what the pattern looks like!

March is for Bikers

Continuing with 2008: A Year in Scarves… we have March is for Bikers. We know a lot of bikers (both motorcyclists and bicyclists) and one thing that they can get is a cold neck! So here’s a small scarf that will keep the neck warm while not adding a lot of bulk (and not trailing out behind one, dangerously).

Full on, the front

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport in “Black Purl”
Needles: Size 4 straights
Pattern: March is for Bikers
Notes: Honestly, there are things I would try to change/improve if I were to design this again. But by the time I finished this one I had made it four or five times, and I needed to be done. I would be open to modifications, for those of you who make this. If you mod it and love the way it turns out, please let me know and I’ll be happy to update the official pattern with your notes!

There was a sale on crazy, so I bought some

Why, what could this possibly be?

Most of the yarn for the Dr. Who scarf

Yarn? Lots of yarn? In sort of a 1970’s/Science Fiction color family? What could I possibly be crazy enough to make with this...? Perhaps....

I'm not done yet!

In which Damejain gets a Christmas present, a few months late

Continuing with 2008: A Year in Scarves, we have February is for Damejain. I’d been talking to her for a while about her needs for a scarf with pockets on the ends (she lives in a much colder city, that sometimes gets ACTUAL SNOW!), but due to her wool allergy, she thought her fiber choices might be limited. I think I came up with something she’ll like…

February is for Damejain

Yarn: Two-and-a-half skeins of Dark Horse Fantasy
Needles: Size 8 straights
Pattern: February is for Damejain, available later today (tomorrow at the latest) in the shop
Notes: This pattern is deceptively simple. Once you get into the groove with the way that the twisted stitches travel, as long as you remember to do a cable every six rows you won’t even have to look at the pattern.

A couple of close-ups of the pockets and cable patterns are in the extended.

Edited to add: the pattern is available for download here.

I'm not done yet!

February is coming…

If I’d had time to post yesterday, this is the photo I would have posted…

February is for Damejain - binding off!

(if you click on that, you can also get a sneak preview of the finished object...)

More details next week!

In which Karen gets a late Christmas present, in three months

Over the next year, in the shop, we’re going to be offering a new scarf pattern once a month. Because we are big sappy dorks who love our friends and family, each pattern is going to be for someone we love. We’re kicking off the year with January is for Karen, Karen being my lovely friend from Scotland. After we display the pattern for three months, sweetie, I’ll be sending it to you!

Streaming Leaves Lace Scarf

image

Yarn: my very own handspun (blogged about here)
Needles: Size 6 DPNs (Lantern Moon, rosewood- some of my favorite needles)
Pattern: Fiber Trends Streaming Leaves Lace Scarf
Notes: I ran out of yarn about eight inches before I wanted to, but… meh. What can you do?! Besides bind off quickly, I mean, and hope for the best. Also, this was a pattern that I shouldn’t have attempted when trying to do anything else such as drink, talk, or listen to TV. I made the same mistake (doing the same row) not once, but *twice*. And I didn’t notice until just before I bound off, and I would have had to have ripped out half the scarf. So I dubbed it a “design feature” and hope that the person to whom this is going will not mind. (I am about 99% sure that she won’t, which is why I left it as is.)

Rusty’s Scarf

A last-minute knitted gift for Rusty, who needs to keep warm in Dayton (since he refuses to move to Florida, even though we want him to).

image

Yarn: some of my handspun!
Needles: Size 11 straights
Pattern: Everybody’s first scarf-- cast on, knit every row until you’re almost out of yarn, then bind off.
Notes: I hope he likes it, and that it keeps him warm!

And thus concludes our knitting in 2006 (I finished both this and the helmet liner on December 31st, before midnight). My full list of completed projects in 2006 is here.

Which of these is not like the others?

image

This is just typical of my day yesterday. Chug along at something, pause, and realize the whole thing went to hell while I wasn’t paying attention. I have no earthly idea what I did to get this so wrong.

Stoopid cables!

Forever hiking Irish

This is the Irish Hiking Scarf I’ve been working on forever, and a matching hat modified from a pattern found in SnB Nation. The hat? The hat was easy. The scarf, though, is kicking my ass. I knit and knit and knit and it never seems to get any longer. So, work in progress (due at Christmas*)…

*But for someone who doesn’t have computer access, so I’m not ruining a surprise by posting here.
