I am in ur sweater, seamin ur sleeves

Rogue, ready to finish

One sleeve is sewed on; one still to go. I may actually finish this sweater in this lifetime… though I still suspect the store may catch on fire/we might have an earthquake/freak tornado… something massive may happen that will cause me not to finish this…

Did I mention that I seamed the hood on Rogue?

Of course, it took some fortification…

Easy Raglan… it’s easy!

image

Yarn: Malabrigo Kettle Dyed/Worsted
Needles: Size 8 circulars
Pattern: Easy Raglan (Ravelry link) from The Green Mountain Spinnery Knitting Book
Notes: I had five skeins of Malabrigo in Olive, and I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough for the pattern. So I bought two more of Velvet Grape and threw in a stripe (which I am still not convinced that it quite matches, but everyone else loves it and so it must match because not that many people could lie, right?!). It turned out that with using one skein of the Velvet Grape, I had one skein and about three yards of the Olive left over. So I could have done it with what I had originally, but I would have been a stressball at the end of that second sleeve. So it’s all good. And I will be putting the extra green and purple skeins to good use soon

1. blurry, but you get the idea, 2. I could put an eye out with those, 3. sleeve detail

The Faux Fair Isle sweater

I just realized I never did blog about this…

Feeling sheepish?

Yarn: Some of my handspun and Cascade Pastaza
Needles: Size 8 circs
Pattern: Faux Fair Isle from Spin to Knit
Notes: Love it! I got a lot of compliments on it at Rhinebeck, and I tried not to let that go to my head. I mean, it’s one thing to be hanging out with a bunch of non-fiber people and have them comment on how much they like what you made. It’s another thing entirely to be hanging out with other obsessed fiber enthusiasts and have them compliment you!

Lara, it just occurred to me that you *were* with us at Rhinebeck, in spirit, as you’re the one who gifted me that BFL I spun up for my sweater!

What will I be wearing Saturday at Rhinebeck…?

Hopefully, this--

(But with the second arm finished.)

Faux Fair Isle

Introducing… the Faux Fair Isle, which is what I’m making to wear at Rhinebeck in place of Rogue. This is an embarrassing quick knit, in the round on circs. The photo below is after about four nights of knitting after work; maybe six hours total.

Faux Fair Isle

I’m using Cascade Pastaza from my stash, and this handspun.

Gratuitous boobage

AKA the “How’s that Simple Knitted Bodice working out for you then since you never talk about it”, post.

Well, I didn’t start on it until I was done with Tubey (battlecry: TUUUUUUUUBEY!) so it wasn’t until a week or two ago that I even picked it up. Then you cast on about six thousand and increase 8 or 10 every other row, which is genius construction but boring as fuck to knit when it’s not in the round. This weekend, I finally hit the join spot, and this is where, according to the pattern, I begin the lace bits.

image

Notice anything? Like maybe how if I start the lace bits here, EVERYONE WILL SEE MY NIPPLES?

Some of you may argue the point that this is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm not done yet!

Tubey Prime

Also posted about here, here, here, and here.

image

Made with approximately ten balls of KnitPicks Wool of the Andes, on size 6 circular needles (wait, it just occured to me that I may have used size 7’s for the arms. Whoops! Oh well, it fits!) and it took roughly three months or so. This wasn’t exactly a non-stop project. I modified the arms by making them taper in and be 3/4 sleeves rather than the slight bell-like sleeves that the original pattern calls for.

Why call her “Tubey Prime”? Two reasons. First reason is this is my first Tubey, a trial Tubey because I wanted to make one for a friend who doesn’t live close-- so I thought try one out on myself first so that I can have a better idea of the construction process and any sizing issues or modifications I want to make. The second, geekier reason is that the colored stripes are done in numbers of rows that are all prime numbers.

Thank you, thank you; I’ll be here all week. Please tip your wait staff.

The never-ending weaving in of ends

Yes, I do know about that trick where you carry the two ends of yarn together for five or six stitches… but I didn’t think that with the color changes, that doing so would be very practical. So here’s what I finally got around to doing this weekend… perhaps today will bring washing and blocking. I know, I know. I said that last week. Whatever. I been busy, yo!

Today’s Tubey status

The good news is that I bound off this morning.

The bad news is that in seaming up the neckhole, I made it just a little too tight. I can get my head through fine; it’s just that the back of the neck pulls a little bit, and the stripes are way stretched out now. I think the solution is to take out the seaming and go with my mom’s suggested no-bra action when wearing. Or maybe a strapless, if I’m wearing it to work (it’s awfully cold at work, if you know what I mean and I think you do).

So tonight after crazy errand time, I will unseam the neck, weave in the fifty thousand stray ends from all the color changes, and wash and block. I have no idea if it’ll dry completely overnight, so maybe I’ll have pictures tomorrow and maybe I won’t. But this also means that my size 6 circs are free, and tomorrow night I’ll be casting on that Simple Knitted Bodice! Whoot!

PS - crazy busy week. No washcloth. Bad knitter!

Tubey; almost finished!

I carry Tubey to all my Stitch ‘n’ Bitch groups, but rarely take it out because (a) it’s been too GD hot and (b) I’ve had sockitis lately. But this week I was able to get about 20 more rows done…

image

At 10 minutes a row, and if I have ... oh, say… well, seven rows to the inch, I want about five more inches… thirty-five rows to go… so that makes 350 minutes ... or almost six hours of knitting. If I can just STAY FOCUSED ON TUBEY then I can finish it up this weekend. I’m really trying not to cast on for this until I’m done with Tubey. Really. Even though it’s hot out and Tubey is getting heavy. Even though I have beautiful sock yarn calling to me. Even though I have a gift to knit before the end of October. Must! Stay! Focused!

I noticed two things while trying on Tubey. One is that it makes my chesticles look GINORMOUS! Thanks for the great rack, mom! The other thing is that I’m definitely going to have to seam up the collar a little bit, and make it smaller, because you can’t just see my bra straps, you could pick them out of a police lineup.

I'm not done yet!

Tubey; almost arms!

Here’s my Tubey in progress… I knit one arm, didn’t like the looseness and length of it, so knit the second arm differently and am now reknitting the first arm. As you can see, I am not using the recommended colors or striping pattern… but everybody seems to be doing theirs differently, so I’m in good company.

image

I’m very glad that I decided to make one for myself prior to making one for Carol, just for the learning experience. I am loving the pattern though, and can see a second one in my future (after I finish Carol’s, of course).

Glesga

I’ve finished the pullover I’ve been working on since October! I bought the yarn when we went to Scotland for WorldCon in August, and thus, have named the sweater Glesga (my Scottish friends will immediately understand why). The pattern is about 50% my own, 50% based on a sweater I found in 25 Gorgeous Sweaters for the Brand-New Knitter. I really liked the ribbing on the bottom, and liked that the gauge was the same for the yarn I had purchased. But I thought the front was a bit dull, so after pouring through The Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches, I added some cables to the front. Then I changed the collar to match the ribbing on the cuffs and bottom, because I thought the garter stitch from the pattern was (a) boring and (b) too short.

My first sweater (2)

It’s done!

image

My very first knitted sweater. You can totally tell where I dropped stitches… where I picked up stitches… where I changed balls of yarn… and I TOTALLY DON’T CARE because I HAVE FINISHED KNITTING MYSELF A GD SWEATER!

I feel bad-ass. But, at the same time, very crafty. I think there’s a place where those two things go hand and hand.

PS - thank you for taking my picture, Amy!  grin

My first sweater (1)

I’ve decided to try a sweater. This sweater, which looks easy enough that I can understand it. Although Not! In! Those! Colors! Hello, bad 80’s teen pop is on the phone? They’d like their pullover back. Something about Tiffany having a gig at the mall and needs some fashion?

I'm not done yet!
