Charlton Heston
October 4, 1923 - April 5, 2008
This may seem silly, but even listing all of the fabulous movies and plays in which he starred, the thing that I admired him most for was for being married to the same woman for 64 years.

My grandmother; my mother’s mother
September 15, 1918 - March 3, 2008
I’ve been putting off posting about this for a couple of days, because I was trying to find the one photo I have of she and I together. I didn’t know my grandmother very well, having only met her a handful of times. I’m sure she saw me bunches when we lived in Baltimore, but I was young then and don’t remember her from that time period. I do remember her sisters who we would visit often, Aunt Nellie and Aunt Mildred, and they are just about an entire post in and of themselves.
I hope this doesn’t sound horrible, but I’m more sorry for the loss that my mother and her siblings are going through right now, than any loss for myself. I grew up with negligable contact with that side of the family and so ... it’s hard to lose what you don’t truly feel that you ever had. I don’t know too many stories about her, but here’s what I do know… She was full of history; loved history, loved knowing about the past, and the few times I did chat with her she loved to tell me about not just her family history (where she lived, where she had worked, where everyone in her family was buried) but the history of Baltimore as she was (if I remember correctly) a fourth generation Ballmoran. I heard that she grew as a person after her husband died, in that she began to travel more (she and my Aunt Mary would often travel together, to many a foreign country) and she picked up a few hobbies like painting and learning new languages.
She had a shade under 90 years. I would like to imagine that she enjoyed most, if not all, of it.

Dan Fogelberg
Dan Fogelberg; August 13, 1951 – December 16, 2007
At our wedding, Tim and I danced to the Dan Fogelberg song, “Leader of the Band.” While that may seem like a sad song to dance to at a wedding, we did it for our dollar dance, to raise money for Hospice in my dad’s name. The line was so long for the dance that the band had to play the song three times, and we raised almost $150.
I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And Papa I don’t think I said
“I love you” near enoughThe leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument
And his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I’m just a living legacy
To the leader of the band-D. Fogelberg

Madeleine L’Engle
I’ve known about this for more than a week, but haven’t had the time to sit down and write the kind of remembrance that she deserves. Madeleine L’Engle, one of the first women science fiction writers that I read. Madeleine L’Engle, who wrote of witches and tesseracts in the same book. In reading Madeleine L’Engle, I discovered that it was possible for a young girl to be vocal about being smart; that a young girl could be a hero.
Madeleine L’Engle; 1918 - 2007
If you’ll excuse me now… I think I have some re-reading to do (and, apparently, some spell-checking. Le Sigh).

Peter Boyle
Peter Boyle
October 18, 1935 - December 12, 2006
Oh, I could just cry. I never saw a single episode of whatever that sit-com was (I’m not a sit-com kind of girl) but in the extended is a YouTube video of what I consider to be his finest work. The funny thing is that I had recently uploaded the song below onto Kermit, and listening to it always makes me smile. Today, it also brings a tear.
