Tilli Tomas bag
Yarn: Tilli Tomas (both yarns) Salt & Pepper is the black with beads, and Pure & Simple is the brown.
Needles: Size 8 circulars
Pattern: I meant to pick up a free copy of the official pattern when I bought the bag, but forgot; I remembered what Carla had said though and just cast on through the grommets, increased, and then knit a big tube until the end, binding off with a Kitchener Stitch like a giant toe.
Notes: I? Am in love. I think if I were to do it again I would use slightly less black… but overall I’m quite smitten. I took it to work today and got a number of compliments. I only used about a quarter of the brown silk that I’d bought to make this, and still have more than half of the black remaining. So… anybody got any pattern ideas...?

Bags, pre-felting
You may have noticed two bags in my sidebar under “finished objects"… they’re finished as in, they’re knitted and felted… but I still need to make liners for them. Here’s a sneak preview of what they looked like, pre-felting:
1. Booga Bag, pre felting, 2. Felted bag, pre felting
The Booga Bag was made with Noro, and as for the second bag… does that yarn look familiar, Secret Pal?

Red felted bag
This bag was a comedy of errors. And it’s a gift for someone I really like, so I feel bad about what I’m about to say here…
Yarn: It started out as one skein of Rio de la Plata, but I ran out before I thought the bag was long enough, so I ripped it halfway back and added a skein of Cascade Jewel Hand Dyed since I really didn’t like the Rio de la Plata whatsoever. It felt nice in the skein, is all I can say. I don’t think I would ever knit with it again.
Needles: Size 8 circular - Addi Naturas! Loved them!
Pattern: Ah hell; I threw the pattern to the wind when I ran out of yarn. Then I made it up as I went along.
Notes: I hope this bag is loved. It turned out very cute, and I like it a lot more felted than I did when I was knitting it up (both times, HAH!). I like the effect of using the two yarns that were similar in color but not exactly the same.

The cute corn bag
This bag has been recieved, so I can officially post about it now (if you’re one of the three people who check the daily photos, you’ve already seen glimpses of it here and there).
Yarn: South West Trading Company “aMAIZing” (100% corn fiber)
Needles: size 3 circulars
Pattern: Soft Drawstring Pouch from Last Minute Knitted Gifts
Notes: I used a smaller needle than the ball band called for (US size 7) because when I started with that (1) the fiber seemed very loose and (2) I was running out of yarn before I was nearing the end of the pattern. So I frogged and reknit with a size 3. I also didn’t make the tassles on the end of the i-cord (again, I was running low on fiber). So… what’s it like to knit with corn...? Odd. It was so unbelivably soft in the ball… and knitting with it dried my hands out so quickly it was almost unbelivable. And then knitted up, the fiber also felt very dry. But so soft before knitting! I am hoping that in time that softness will come back… otherwise, Beth, I’m very sorry for giving you such a dry gift. But who else can say they have a bag made from corn?!

A modified “Bling Bag”
Pattern: Bling Bag (available here)
Yarn: Malabrigo (is that a hard “g” or a soft “g”? I never know how to pronounce it!)
Needles: Uhm, I’ve already totally forgotten, as I actually knitted it up a few months ago but just felted it last week. I know they were circulars (DPNs once I got to the decreases) and they were either size 7s or 8s.
Notes: I did a number of modifications on this pattern, both intentional and not. I didn’t use the intended yarn, so I didn’t make the little acorns (they’re devilishly cute, but I thought they’d look a little bulbous with the different yarn). I think I felted it a little TOO much, because the yarn-overs were lost and I had to really work to open them back up. So much work, in fact, that I stopped at four and ran the handles through differently than originally intended. Which meant I needed a different way to anchor the handles, so I used some buttons that have a long history within my family. And then when I was sewing the handles on, for some reason I had turned the bag inside out at some point, and I sewed the buttons on while the bag was wrong side (purl side) facing. Everyone at my Stitch ‘n’ Bitch said that it was not a big drama and to leave it, so I did.
Now, back to the felting! Here’s a before shot:

Stash handbag
Normally I wouldn’t post a surprise gift on my blog pre-gifting (with such obviousness); but I seriously doubt that the girl whom this is for reads my blog. This is a “Stash Handbag” from the One Skein book upon which this One Skein Secret Pal exchange is based.
I made it with some Plymouth Encore, Moda Dea Dream, and a green cotton (sorry, misplaced the ball band); size 9 circulars for the body and size 7 DPNs for the trim and handles. The whole thing took about three hours… if that. Very easy project. Oh; and while the pattern calls for a zippered bag, I added a flap and went with a button because (1) I haven’t tried zippers yet and (2) it came out much smaller than the pattern called for and I didn’t think a zipper would fit. I hope she likes it… I’ve been having a devil of a time figuring her out. All I know with certanty is that she likes Skittles. And sports. And lime green. Hence the button, and the green yarn, and the fact that I’ll be filling it with Skittles before I send it to her in a week or so.
I’m very nervous, and hope she likes this bag.

Homespun bag
Sunday, I knitted up this bag from the wool/silk-confetti yarn that I’ve been spinning:
It may look rough, but it was made with love. I hope it serves Diane well!

So, how’s that felted bag working out?
Remember the really quick, easy felted bag I started a while ago?
Here’s what it looked like with all of its pieces, before being dumped in the washer:
And here’s what it looked like after a tour in hot water--

The perfect felted bag, in progress
Here’s what I knit all weekend. I haven’t put a progress bar up for it, since it’s hard to judge progress without a pattern or at least an idea… and I’m kind of making this shit up as I go.
I still need to make three pockets (which means I need to decide if I want them solid color - and what color - or stripes - and what order of colors) and I need to make the straps (which I think I’ll make in the heathery purple to match the top and bottom).

The quest for the perfect felted backpack/bag
I am on a mission. I want to make a felted bag. Make that a felted backpack. See, I want something that I can take to science fiction conventions with me-- I love my oversized purse/bag, but carrying something on one shoulder for three days takes a toll, ya know? But it must have qualities of my lovely Disney Animal Kingdom bag, with pockets that are easy to drop a cell phone or a small knitting project into. I sort of like this Packy Sack (not the one with the hand puppet flap) but I’d want more sturdy handles. Sturdy, like this Satchel at Knitty. Only, two of them, a la a backpack. Here’s a backpack from Knitpicks (I would not put my dog in it, however); and I kind of like it except that there are no outside pockets. And there’s like fifty gabillion felted bag patterns here but not a one of them is eeeexxxxactly what I’m envisioning.
You know what this is leading up to, right?
Taking a bunch of things from a bunch of patterns and making my own.
I wonder… If I got some d-rings, and sewed them onto the bottom edge of the bag rather than the bottom end of the strap, could I make straps and then loop them through the d-rings like belts? Would that be sturdy enough, or should I just sew the straps onto the back of the pack? I’m thinking I’d have more leeway for adjusting length with the d-rings… but how well would they hold up?
....... am I just talking to myself here...?
