Little Women (Little Women, #1)Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I recently re-read this, needing something light and wanting to revisit a book I used to love, and I was pleased to note that it held up very well. I will always want to be Jo, and I will always get frustrated with young Amy, always get teary when Beth dies. This is a comfort book to read, much like comfort food for the heart. Yes, parts may be old-fashioned, but think of when it was read. And the moral direction in which it points (which I noticed was slightly more heavy-handed than I had previously been aware of) is no less important. Jo may wind up married, but she makes that choice on her own terms, and never ceases to be brave and go against the grain while growing up and finding her way.

You know what else I find interesting about the moral compass offered? I don’t find it to be a brickbat of Christianity — yes, it’s certainly Christian, but I like that it shows how the heart of the message is how it reflects in your life story, not how often you go to church. It’s not about the Pharisees, it’s about the Good Samaritan; it’s about those who truly live a life not spent in pursuit of self gratification.
