3. If you call in sick, you probably really are feeling like not working that day as you are feeling sick of work. Yes, I’ve done that, back in my earlier days. Then, as I progressed, I just never got sick. Ever. Never missed work due to ‘sick’ days, real or imagined, for the last 15 or 20 years I worked. I guess I was no longer sick of my job. Of course, I also had many many legitimate earned personal days and took advantage of them, which maybe helped keep me from being sick of my job. I got paid for 140 personal days when I left, which was the most you could get paid for. I was earning about 40 days a year when I left. I kept it down to the 140 total by pre-scheduling and getting official approval for one personal day a week for the last 3 or 4 years that I worked. I told everyone my religion didn’t believe in not getting what you were entitled to.
   But, as a manager, it drove me nuts when employees would call in sick and run their sick time down to zero. It sometimes backfired on them when they really got sick and had no paid time left. I even had to get one person to retire as she was eligible to do that but not eligible to continue as an employee without getting paid for the real sick days she then needed.
   I once worked for someone who talked about ‘calling in sick’ days. What if you called in sick and were seen shopping at the mall, we asked. Her philosophy was, how would the person doing the seeing know that the doctor didn’t prescribe a shopping trip to the mall as recovery therapy for the person who called in sick? She was a good person to work for, very sensible.
   In my first real job with C&P phone co of Md, you didn’t get paid for the first day of calling in sick. I couldn’t afford to take sick days as missing a day’s pay would have really hurt us. But I did miss one day due to having had a party the night before, celebrating a visit of a SF fan from Germany. A special and rare occasion, so I guess it was unavoidable. Oh, and then there was the time I missed the first day of work at a new job. I had been assigned to the midnight shift at a hospital and my first night was New Year’s Eve. I celebrated much too well starting much too early that day. By the time it was time to go to work, I was dead. Very bad girl. I think that’s why I no longer celebrate New Year’s Eve. So, yes, a hangover is legit for a sick day.
